The most common reasons why apricots can shed green fruits and how to treat them

In regions with hot summers and warm winters, apricots grow in plantings, along railways and highways, in the courtyards of cities and villages. In the summer, almost every year, the trees are dotted with fruits that ripen without watering, fertilization, or fungicide treatment. And only with severe frosts, which sometimes occur in April or May, the formed ovary dies and crumbles. Why is the apricot planted in the garden shedding green fruits, do summer residents wonder what it lacks? Stone fruit culture loves heat, but it also tolerates cold well, takes root well not only in the south, many varieties feel fine in mid-latitudes.

Possible reasons

Apricot fruits fall off with sudden temperature changes, the ovary crumbles with strong gusts of wind, when there is too much of it on the branches.

A tree that grows well in the south in hot and sultry climates, oddly enough, may experience a lack of moisture in the regions to the north. Its excess, stagnant water no less negatively affects the condition of the apricot.

The scab, the development of which is provoked by pathogenic fungi, is localized on the leaves, spreads to the shoots, and damages the bark. Harmful microorganisms are activated by sudden changes in temperature and excess moisture.

The disease caused by them, capable of destroying entire plantings of fruit trees, is one of the main reasons why unripe fruits fall off.

Apricots suffer from monilial burn, which spreads rapidly, destroying flowers, leaves, ovary. The disease occurs when infected with pathogenic fungi.

As a result of their activation, very few fruits remain on the trees; most of them rot or dry out in an immature form.

Treatment methods

Spraying trees with herbal infusions, Bordeaux liquid and other copper-based products helps to prevent the occurrence of moniliosis, powdery mildew, coccomycosis.

To protect apricots from pests, it is necessary to dig up the trunk circles, apply belts to catch them, and collect the falling ovary. Birds help to cope with parasites; feeders can be installed to attract birds to the garden. Ground beetles and ladybugs destroy pests. They love parsley, celery, dill. It is not difficult to sow these plants in or near the garden.

The article is very helpful, thanks! The only thing I did not find the answer to my question. Our apricots began to yield 3 years ago, the first 2 years the fruits were large, although not very much (this is in the Urals). This year there were a lot of fruits, but they were all very small. Before that, we did a high-cut cropping, maybe you did something wrong?

Good day. Most likely, the apricot simply could not yet gain strength for full fruiting, the root could not cope with the rapidly growing crown. Are there many branches growing after pruning? If, as a result of cutting in height, a strong thickening of the crown has occurred, then the fruits, of course, will be small.
If so, then it will be necessary to thin it out, normalizing the number of shoots. In the spring, be sure to carry out several full dressings with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Well, and, of course, occupational treatment from diseases and pests. And I think everything will be fine with the apricot!
