What to do if gum lesions appear on the cherry, treatment and control measures

Many gardeners, when growing fruit trees in a garden plot, are faced with the problem of cherry gum flow and the need for treatment. The appearance of viscous transparent drops is a kind of signal that a plant has a disease. When slugs are detected, a number of urgent actions are required, so it is worth learning about the causes of the appearance of gum formations, existing methods of treatment and prevention.

Definition of gum flow

Gum disease or gummosis is a tree disease, the main symptom of which is the appearance of gum. A resinous discharge can be found on the trunk, branches, leaves and fruits. In childhood, many tried to try such formations as chewing gum. The taste of the gum is bitter, and after finding it in the mouth, an unpleasant aftertaste remains. Cherry fumigation requires timely measures, since being late can be fraught with the death of the tree.

Causes of occurrence

Gum on cherries is considered a bad symptom. In most cases, gum formation is the plant's response to adverse factors. The main reasons include:

  • damage to branches or trunk of a mechanical nature;
  • the inability of the tree to withstand the weight of heavy fruits;
  • sharp fluctuations in temperature or high humidity;
  • getting sunburn;
  • the consequences of freezing;
  • growth in heavy clay soil;
  • overuse of fertilizers;
  • violation of the timing of trimming;
  • the result of the activity of harmful insects;
  • infection with infections of fungal origin.

tree disease

The most common cause of gum disease is bark damage, from which the plant tries to heal with resin. Through the gum, insects and pathogens of various diseases can penetrate deep into the plant, which further exacerbates the situation and weakens the plant. At the same time, cherries are trying to release even more gum and, in the absence of timely measures, they may die.

Treatment methods

The method of treating gum disease involves the use of a cardinal "surgical method", involving the complete removal of the affected area with a sharp knife. How to treat gommosis:

  • a sharp instrument is chosen for work and disinfection is carried out;
  • gum is cut out with a knife, while capturing 5 cm of a healthy area, if it is in the cracks, the resin is carefully removed from them;
  • in the cleaned places, they are treated with 1% copper sulfate, thoroughly wetting them with a sponge with a solution;
  • the tree is left alone for 2 days.

treatment methods

Next, they take a garden pitch and coat all the places treated with vitriol with it.If the resin on the cherry tree has been cleaned from a large area, then apply a bandage from a garden bandage. Some people use nigrofol or Kuzbasslak putty for such purposes.

Experienced gardeners do not advise giving up the traditional remedy, since the var is cheaper, effective, safe for plants and people, and is easy to use.

It is possible to carry out the treatment of gum removal at any warm season. In late autumn, at low temperatures, such work is not carried out, since the wound may not have time to dry out and overgrow, which will lead to freezing of cherries in winter.

Prevention

To combat gum flow, it is not enough to carry out "surgical" operations. Disease prevention includes a whole range of measures:

  • for planting, you need to choose the right varieties of cherries that are most suitable for growing in a particular region, taking into account its climatic characteristics;
  • it is necessary to choose a suitable place for the growth of the tree, avoid areas prone to flooding, soil with problems with moisture passage and access to air roots;
  • do not remove or damage the old bark, as it is a reliable protection of the underlying layers, prevents freezing;
  • to exclude the plant getting sunburn in the spring, whitewash the trunks;
  • in the cold season, the tree is provided with additional protection and shelter, standard species and branches are insulated with burlap.

wood processing

Timely pruning helps to prevent gum leakage. Experienced gardeners recommend removing the "hatched" young shoots during the summer period, preventing them from reaching the stage of desalinization. Small wounds heal much faster, the removal of stronger branches will be more painful for cherries in the future.

To increase the stress resistance of the tree and improve the quality of its survival, you should not neglect the feeding, while you should not get carried away with nitrogen fertilizers. Timely spraying with fungicides and insecticidal preparations will help prevent the invasion of pests and fungal diseases.
